  • Why Flash Player?

Why Flash Player - Jesse WardenAdobe is doing a marketing campaign to help answer “why?” over at 30onair.com. Specifically, why would you utilize a certain technology, or set of technologies, that Adobe offers. The site aggregates videos on YouTube from people around the world answering these questions in about 30 seconds. You record a 30 second video of yourself answering any of the why questions, upload to YouTube, and tag with “30onair”. Your video will then be shown with the rest on 30onair.com.

Here’s my first one on “Why Flash Player?” – High Quality (HD) | Low Quality (YouTube)

  • Speaking at 360Flex: Making Bling with Flex

I’m speaking at 360Flex next week, Feburary 25th at 4:00 pm. My topic is officially called “Big and Famous: How to Succeed as an Independent Developer”. My topic will cover:

    1. Why and how to become an independent developer
    2. Why and how to make money
    3. Why and how to build your personal brand
    4. Why and how to use Flex to make it all happen

I chose my topic for a few reasons. First, when I started working for myself, I knew jack, and had no one to help me. I flailed and failed on my first attempt. I don’t feel others should have to go through what I did. Secondly, the Flex market has gotten to the point where all the popular topics are taken; I need something unique, yet I feel represents me. Finally, I like speaking about a subject that will help others succeed.

    Hope to see you there!

That’s right, a pre-conference all day training session on Flex. 360|Flex is the premiere Flex and AIR conference. We were the first Flex conference and we’re still growing and getting better. Don’t miss out, only $480 for an individual or $1500 for a 4-person team. More details can be found at http://360flex.com

  • Flash CS3 Components in a Flex ActionScript Project

I am a bottleneck at work. It’s made worse by the fact that 30% of my day is spent coding. The rest is working with co-workers on implementation details for projects and working project managers on time estimations & resource allocations. So, even the 30% of my day that I do get to code is fraught with distractions. Telecommuting has helped some since those days, I can focus more, but not much.

  • Mobile: Flash Player 9 vs. Flash Lite 3

Peter Elst had a good post updating us on the ecosystem of Flash on Mobile. His point about Flash Lite 3 vs. Tamarin-Tracing got me thinking.

As an American, I’m uber-confused on which VM to hedge my bets on. Do I continue writing components for Flash Lite in AS2 awaiting the day when I’ll actually get a paying gig/job doing it? Or, do I bide my time for Tamarin-Tracing? Or are phones getting fast enough where they can run Flash Player 9 natively? I think the last question is irrelevant because Adobe wouldn’t have spent all that effort on Tamarin-Tracing if it wasn’t valid.

If you were Steve Jobs, which one would you put on the iPhone?
