A few years ago I worked with a company and developed a Coldfusion based CMS with a Flash based management console. The sites hosted could be either HTML/CFM, Flash or a combination of the two. The layout for pages was always based on templates that the average user could never figure out so I developed a GUI template editor in Flash that was very similar to your idea that allowed them to drag and drop elements around the stage to position and size them. The template just loaded up the saved xml that told it where to put what items. Flex (at that time Flash) is a perfect environment for that sort of app.

Dear Jesse Warden,

Hope you have seen Flexplorer [http://www.luracast.com/tools/] a reference tool for Flex/AIR framework and Flex components packaged as .swc files.

I've also built a MXML interpreter which can show a preview of how the flex application is going to look like.

May be your experiment will help to take it little further to make a WYSIWYG authoring system for Flex

Thanks & Regards,
Arul
